Notes: 6/25/04 - The 17th DC-2 built, NC13717 was a DC-2-112, c/n 1243. It was TWA's "City of Philadelphia". This photo was probably taken during a maintenance run-up, as the rudder lock is on and an external battery is plugged in. Note "General Air Express" right behind the pilot's window, and the spinners which protected the cylinder on the counterweighted, constant-speed props.
Check out those landing lights in the nose! They soon put them on the wing leading edges because they tended to create glare for the pilots. I suspect that this photo was taken fairly early in '1243's career as it does not have de-ice boots.
If I correctly interpret its history, this aircraft was operated by TWA (Transcontinental & Western Air) until it was impressed by the USAAF in July 1942. It became a C-32A, s/n 42-65577, and was one of 24 such DC-2's. I gather that they were used for pilot training, with airline pilots as instructors. One source indicates it went to National Airlines; another to Northeast; a third says it went to Braniff; and a fourth indicates it was broken up after military service. |
