N888DG was delivered to the USAF, MATS, on January 4, 1956. It was converted to VC-118A configuration for VIP transportation. In June, 1976 the government sold it to Pacific Alaska Airlines for $24,000. Further details on its history, from FAA files, are below the photos.
Everts' has a very nice fleet of '6's. There are several DC-6 and Convair hulls in the boneyard in Fairbanks, which were certainly bought for spares, especially the engines

The venerable DC-6A. Workhorse of workhorses. Note the forward cargo door. The P&W R2800-CB16 series is one of the world's best engines ever.
The first registration on this aircraft may have been N2980F, but it has been N888DG all of its operational life. Contrary to most, it is registered as a military C-118A rather than a civilian DC-6A.
