Notes: 6/5/04 - The caption to this photo says "AIR MAIL IN 1950", and the text reads, "Mail and other cargo is being loaded on a United Air Lines Cargoliner 230. United Air Lines ranks first among all airlines in carrying the largest volume of air mail. In 1950 domestic air mail service by all airlines extended over 158,977 route miles and approximately 47,000,000 ton-miles of mail were flown."
Note the I-beam extending through the cargo door opening, for lifting heavy objects into the aircraft. It looks like the forklift there has three used C-54 tires in a rack. Under the left wing one can see a Fairchild PT series aircraft, an SNJ/T6 and two BT-13/15's in the distance.
United operated about 40 C-54/DC-4's including eight CargoLiner types. There is a reasonable chance that this is N30054, a C-54B, c/n 10499, fuselage DC230, named "Mississippi River" and operated by United from 5/46 to 7/58. It would have been built in Chicago as a C-54B-1-DC, USAAF 42-72394. It was seen in Dublin, Ireland in March 1965 as an Interocean Airways aircraft with Luxembourg registration LX-HEP.
This photo has the note on it, "School and College Service, United Air Lines". |
