Notes: 12/8/04 - To the uninitiated in the day of the C-130 Hercules, it might look like a big Lockheed. Its not.
Douglas built 50 of the C-133 Cargomaster series from 1955-61, in their Long Beach, CA plant. There were 35 of the C-133A and 15 C-133B's, but I understand that all were converted to B configuration including engine upgrades and clamshell doors in the rear. The C-133 was designed to replace the C-124 Globemaster.
Allied Aircraft Sales of Tucson, AZ purchased C-133A, Serial No. 56-1999 from the U.S. Government for $6,133.00 in November, 1973. It was at Davis-Monthan AFB at the time. There followed a somewhat sordid series of shattered dreams and broken promises until Mr. Carlson rescued it in 1978 and took it to Alaska.
I understand that because of certification limitations it is used only occasionally, for loads that must go north and won't fit into anything else. |

Notes: According to my 1960-61 Janes, the C-133A had four 6000-EHP, P&W T-34-P-3 engines and grossed at #255,000.
The C-133B has the T34-P-9W, of 7,500 EHP each. Empty weight is #126,363 and gross 286,000, meaning that it carries more than its own weight! The usable cargo space is 90' long and 11' wide by at least 12' high. Wing span is 179', length 157' and height 48'! I believe that N199AB has been upgraded to "B" configuration. |

Notes: The Cargomaster had a problem. Simply put, they came apart in the air. I remember when that was happening, and when the Air Force retired them for that reason. Most of the breakups occurred over water and there was little to work with in an accident investigation. I don't think that those bands around the outside, at each fuselage former, are original and they probably add to crew ease-of-mind.
You can see the forward cargo door, which is over 8' each way. |

Notes: There are clamshell doors at the rear and a loading ramp. The loading ramp can support a load of #25,000 and can be raised from the ground with a #10,000 load on it.
Along with other cargo duties the C-133's were used to transport Atlas ICBM, and Thor and Jupiter IRBM missiles. |
