Notes: The Reading Air Show at Reading, PA, was started in the 1950's. It was among the very first of the big fly-ins. The latest and greatest in corporate aircraft were on display.
People like OnMark were there with their fast and plush converted military aircraft like this B-26. OnMark did what they called a "ring-spar modification". One could not get from the back of the B-26 to the front because of the wing spar. They did a mod where they made a large opening in the spar and built a structural ring around it to allow one to more easily move from the back to the front. Note the cowling and spinners - - definitely not stock military!
Note also the Lockheed on the left. Many were modified by Lear and others. I have no idea what model this one was but it was pretty, and fast. Even though such aircraft were quite common at the time they still made our hearts throb!
See that intruder on the right there, under the B-26 wing? The Grumman G-1 (G-159) Gulfstream was among the first of a new generation of corporate aircraft. Only a few were in service at the time of this photo, but it marked the beginning of the end of one era! |
