Notes: : 9/16/04 - I shot this pretty little Champ at the 2003 Seaplane Fly-in in Greenville, Maine. If airplanes had feelings, '912 would probably have an identity crisis.
The 7/16/46 original Application for Airworthiness shows it as Aeronca 7AC, 7AC-3631, NC84912 with an A-65-8, 65-HP engine. It remained a 7AC until 1966. A 7/21/66, FAA '337 by Mesaba Aviation, Grand Rapids, MN says "Converted to 7CCM Conv. in accordance with service letter 15." They installed a new C-90-12 engine, a large baggage compartment, wired the aircraft, installed starter and generator, fabricated two 6.5 gallon wing fuel tanks and more. Also installed PeeKay 1500 floats and fin. Model shown on the '337 is "7CCM Conv."
Various attempts were made over the years to show the model as 7CCM, 7CCM Conv., or 7AC 7CCM Conv., but it never "took" with the FAA. The last attempt, a 4/2/99, Application for Registration by Frederic D. Roy with a model change to "Aeronca 7CCM Conv.", was rejected by the FAA. The current registration shows it as a 7AC although it is obviously in 7CCM configuration. I'm sure it really doesn't matter. Call it what you want, just go have a good time! |

Notes: Tranquility. At home I don't even hear the alarm when it goes off in the morning and Elaine gets up, but when at a fly-in I'm awake and alert at daybreak - - without an alarm. This little Champ was sitting there quietly waiting for me.
Frederic C. Roy, Ellsworth, ME 52B, Greenville Seaplane Base, Greenville, ME September 2003 Wendell Sproul. As many old taildraggers, N84912 has been groundlooped and/or flipped a time or two. A 12/3/48, CAA '337 shows repairs to the left wing struts, landing gear and landing gear fittings. A 12/9/57 '337 shows that both wing tips were repaired, three struts replaced, new engine cowl, boot cowl, rudder and etc. That should be "a word to the wise" for those considering a taildragger. It really doesn't have to happen. |
