Notes: 8/12/04 - One might say that an Aeronca Chief is always an Aeronca Chief, but that is not quite true when you throw in the Alaska factor. As with most fabric covered aircraft there, '46E has uncovered landing gears. And who knows - - there might be a C-90 or O-200 under the cowl there.
About 500, 11BC's were built by Aeronca Aircraft Corp. of Middletown, Ohio under ATC-761 which was issued in August, 1947. An obvious difference between the 11AC and 11BC is the dorsal fin. It also advanced from an A-65 to the C-85 engine. The C-85-8F does not have starter and generator drives like the -12.
The 11BC is often called the "Super Chief", but in company records that name was only officially given to the 11CC. |

Notes: "Splates", as we used to call them, are most likely found in Alaska where everything imaginable is done to an airplane to get in and out better. Spill plates are used to create lift by keeping the air from spilling off of the tips. My father tried them (once) on a Stearman. I really don't know if they help or not but certainly each person is welcome to his own theory!
You could buy your brand new 11BC for $2665. This one is for sale but you'd have to multiply that quite a bit to get to its present value. |
